If I remember correctly, Russell T. Davis wrote that this is where he thought the rot set in for the classic series. I think he's wrong, that would come later with "Trial of a Time Lord". As other reviewers have said, any story following the brilliant "Caves of Androzani" was always going to have a hard job, even more so as introducing a new Doctor only complicates things further. I would even go as far to say that having this episode scheduled on the end of a season was one of the late John Nathan-Turner's greater mistakes.

Colin Baker gives us an ebullient first turn in the role he was going to have for only a short while. I won't mention the costume, I think that has been disected enough over the years and is generally regarded as a mistake, I also think some of the Doctor's behaviour towards Peri was also a mistake and very misplaced.

The supporting cast are ok, Kevin McNally tries to make something out of the nothing Space Lieutenent Hugo Lang whilst Maurice Denham makes the best of a bad script as Edgeworth/Azmael. The main highlights for me were the Jacondans who I thought looked great (but could have done better than Hot Glue guns for weapons). Mestor (the main bad guy) and the rest of the production values are typical for the period and are used relatively well.

I Don't think it's the worst Who by any stretch (Delta and the Bannermen a definite contender for that honour) and as a new Doctor Story I think it's better than say, Robot (wait for the hate mail on that one). Extras are a bit thin on the ground (untypical for a Who release) but included all the usual trails, production highlights and a nicely sparkling commentary from Colin Baker and friends (second only to Peter Davison and his commentaries).

Directed by a man who admitted he knew nothing about science fiction by a script writer with little experience in writing TV scripts, poor monsters and OMG the costumes - horrendous. The costume designer obviously had a bad day not just with Colin's outfit but Peri and Hugo's too. Such a plummit in quality from Caves of Androzani is astonishing but this was an important regeneration story so the poor standards are unforgivable. Not even Colin Baker nor the likes of Maurice Denham could save this story which in my view is the worst of the entire history of Doctor Who and I will be buying for the extras not the story.
